Chapter 31 · Not Luna

"Mine," Cassian said again, and I shoved both hands into his chest so hard my palms stung.

"Say that word one more time."

"Mine," he said. Slower. Like he wanted me to feel the shape of it.

We were still standing where he'd said it the first time, right by the exam table, the overhead light buzzing because I never got around to fixing the ballast. My gauze roll had rolled off the counter and unspooled across the floor between us like something had already bled out here.

"I'm not Luna," I said. "Not his. Not yours. I'm not a word you get to put on me because you've got a nicer suit than Ethan."

"Never said Luna." Cassian didn't move back. If anything he leaned into the space I'd just made, close enough I could feel the heat coming off him through his shirt, close enough that when he breathed out I felt it against my jaw. "Luna's his mess. I don't want his leftovers."

"Then what do you want?"

"The clinic.
