Chapter 14 · she yelled
He twisted his wrist.
The blade vanished.
At the same moment, the nearest soldier fired.
Kade rolled, dragging Evelyn with him. The shot punched into the floor where her heart had been. He came up on one knee and threw his empty hilt. It struck the soldier's helmet hard enough to drop him.
Mira slammed her palm against the lower-deck panel. The wall split open, revealing a narrow maintenance shaft.
"Go!" she yelled. "The convoy just hit the junction!"
Evelyn pulled Kade into the shaft. He caught the edge with one hand, but his grip slipped.
"Don't you dare fall," she said.
"You worried about me?"
"I'm worried about the bond."
"Sure."
She grabbed his wrist. His palm closed around hers. The contact sent a warm pulse up her arm, followed by a flash of his memory.
A child's house.
A red door.
A man standing beside a buried machine with one hand on a control panel.
Evelyn stumbled.
Kade caught her against his chest. "What did you see?"
"You tell me."
"I asked first."
"A red door. Someone under a house.
