Chapter 15 · The Warning in the Ruins
"Move, Evelyn!" Kade slammed into her hard enough to knock the air out of her lungs.
The ceiling came down where she had been standing.
Stone cracked across the old house, sending chunks of plaster and rusted beams through the room. Evelyn hit the floor with Kade over her, his forearm braced beside her head, his body taking the worst of the falling debris.
"Get off me," she gasped.
"I will when the roof stops trying to kill you."
"That was not the roof."
A blue-white pulse tore through the broken rafters. The walls shuddered. Dust rolled over them, hot and sharp in Evelyn's throat.
Kade turned his head toward the sound. His eyes had gone silver around the edges.
"Crown breach," he said.
Evelyn shoved at his chest. He barely moved. "You said the Crown couldn't track us here."
"I was wrong."
"You? Wrong? That's new."
"Save the attitude for when we're not under six tons of house."
He grabbed her wrist and dragged her toward the doorway. His fingers locked around her like a cuff. His palm was hot. Too hot.
