Then the white door.
Then fire without heat.
Evelyn gasped and shoved away from him.
Kade caught the doorframe. "What did you see?"
"You were here."
"I know."
"When?"
He looked toward the ceiling as another crack crawled through it. "When the first rift opened."
For a moment, the shouting outside disappeared. Evelyn heard only the pulse in her ears and the matching beat in Kade's chest.
Her foster father's house.
The room where she had hidden as a child.
Kade had been there when the city split open.
"You were Crown," she said. "You came with them."
"I don't know."
"You came into my house. You told me to hide."
"I don't remember telling you anything."
"But you remember the house."
"I remember pieces."

He crossed the space between them. Evelyn backed into the wall, but he stopped before touching her.
His breathing was rough. His face was close enough for her to feel each breath against her upper lip.
"Listen to me," he said. "Whatever happened here, I wasn't hunting you."
"You hunted me through half the city."
