Chapter 46 · Don't let go!

The core flared.

The bond pulled tight enough to hurt.

He shouted and tore the spike free.

The landing collapsed beneath him.

Kade jumped.

For one second, he hung over the gap with nothing beneath his boots. The copies fell with him, their hands snapping toward his coat.

I pulled the ring toward the exit.

The platform shot sideways.

Kade slammed onto it, but his fingers caught the edge. His body swung over the void.

I dropped the ring and reached for him.

"Don't let go!" he shouted.

"You think I planned to?"

My fingers closed around his wrist. The impact nearly dragged me over the edge. Pain ripped through my shoulder.

Kade's grip clamped around my forearm.

"You're going to fall," he said.

"Then pull."

"The bridge is breaking."

"Then pull faster."

He hauled himself up inch by inch. His coat brushed my knees. Blood ran from his side and dotted the platform between us.

The copies landed behind him.

One grabbed his ankle.

Kade looked back. "Evelyn, let go."

"No."

"If it pulls me down, it pulls you too."

"Good."

"That wasn't permission."

"I wasn't asking."

The copy twisted his leg. Kade's pain punched into my body.
