Chapter 62 · Convenient
"Convenient."
"You think I want to remember?"
"I think you remember more than you admit."
His face went still.
That was answer enough.
Evelyn yanked her wrist free and shoved the pistol against his chest. The muzzle pressed into the torn fabric of his coat.
"What did you do?"
"I don't know."
"Don't give me that blank-eyed Crown answer."
"I said I don't know."
"You built the first rift, didn't you?"
The chamber went silent except for the warning siren.
Kade's pupils tightened. His breathing stopped for one beat.
Evelyn saw it. So did the console.
A hidden panel snapped open beneath the control column. Inside sat a narrow black port with a Crown seal burned around it.
Kade stared at the port.
"What is that?" she demanded.
"A memory interface."
"For you?"
"For whoever they used as the original architect."
"That wasn't my question."
His gaze returned to hers. "Yes. For me."
The next tremor threw her sideways. Kade caught her around the waist before she hit the console. His arm locked across her back. Her shoulder struck his chest, and the solid beat of his heart slammed against her ear.
One beat.
Two.
Her own heart matched it.
