Chapter 9 · It means I owe them money now too?

"It means I owe them money now too?"

"It means they won't stop until you're dead."

A drone rose over the gate, its cannon opening.

Kade dragged Evelyn toward a narrow service door. She shoved the case into his hands.

"Hold this."

He stared at it. "You're giving it back?"

"No. I'm making you carry it."

"You really are a disaster."

"And you're still following me."

They reached the door. Evelyn pulled a stolen access card from her sleeve and jammed it into the reader.

Red.

"Try again," Kade said.

"It was working an hour ago."

"The Crown changed the locks."

"You work for them. Open it."

"I told you. They can turn me off."

The drone cannon charged behind them.

Kade caught Evelyn's hand and pressed it against the scanner. The blue ring around her wrist lit up. The door flashed green.

He leaned close, his mouth near her ear. "The bond is using your pulse as a key."

"You could've mentioned that earlier."

"You were busy refusing to listen."

"I listen fine. I just don't obey."

The service door unlocked.

They slipped through as the drone fired.
