He spun toward it. "Get out of my head!"

"I can't."

She appeared through the smoke, wearing a torn commander jacket. Blood ran from her temple. Her pistol was gone, but her hand still curled like it held one.

Kane backed away from her. "This isn't real."

"You tell me. You're the one who dragged me here."

"I didn't drag you anywhere."

"Then why can I feel your heartbeat?"

He could feel hers too. Fast. Hard. Close enough to match his own.

The hangar shook. A blast rolled through the floor.

Selena grabbed his jacket. "What is this place?"

"A memory."

"Whose?"

"Mine."

"You were never in this hangar."

"Not in this life."

Her grip tightened. "Stop talking like that."

"You wanted the truth."

"I want facts."

"Fine. In three years, the bastion falls. Victor seals the gates. He sends every remaining pilot into a suicide charge and watches from the command tower. You order my execution after I come back."

Selena went silent.

The fire behind her climbed higher.

"I order your execution?" she asked.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you believe I caused the breach."

"Did you?"

"No."

"How do I know?"

"You don't. That's the problem.
