"Don't touch that box, Kane." Selena's pistol pressed under his jaw before his hand reached the metal case.
Kane stopped with two fingers above the lid. The cold barrel dug into his skin. Behind him, Selena's body heat cut through his jacket, close enough that he could feel her breath move against the side of his neck.
"You brought me into an armed bunker," he said. "Then you point a gun at me for touching a package?"
"I point a gun at you because you keep surviving things that should kill you."
"That's not a crime."
"In this fortress? It usually means treason."
Her left hand caught his wrist and twisted it behind his back. Not hard enough to break. Hard enough to remind him who controlled the room.
The case sat on the command table between them. Black alloy. No markings. No lock he could see. Victor's messenger had placed it there less than a minute ago, then stepped back with six armed guards covering every exit.
Victor hadn't come in person.
That was the first problem.
The second was the red light blinking on the case.
Kane stared at it. "Selena. Let go."
