Chapter 50 · That's almost sweet

"That's almost sweet."

"Keep talking and I'll fix that."

They ran.

The north tunnel door stood thirty feet away, hidden behind a collapsed console. Kane moved by memory, counting steps under his breath.

"Left," he said.

Selena followed without questioning him.

"Right. Stop."

She stopped so close her shoulder pressed into his back.

"What now?" she asked.

"Tripwire."

"I can't see it."

"I can hear the relay."

"You hear electricity?"

"I hear the bad kind."

He crouched and reached toward the floor. His fingers found a thin cable. He cut it with the edge of his broken restraint.

A red targeting dot appeared on Selena's chest.

Kane moved first.

He drove her sideways as a rifle cracked. The round clipped his upper arm and punched the wall.

Selena landed on top of him, one knee braced beside his hip. Her pistol came up under his chin this time.

"You shoved me."

"You're welcome."

"You got shot."

"It's a scratch."

"You don't get to decide that."

The targeting dot slid across his ribs and stopped over Selena's shoulder.

Kane caught her waist and rolled them behind the console. Her breath broke against his throat.
