Chapter 12 · When the Grid Dies

"You signed the transfer." I slammed the paper against Kane's chest before he could shut the vault door.

He caught it. Didn't look at it. His eyes stayed on me, dark and flat. "Where did you get that."

"Your file cabinet. Your signature. Your lie." My voice cracked. I hated that it cracked. "Eli's cage order. Dated three weeks before you ever showed up at my door with your fake marriage deal."

Kane's jaw tightened. He pulled the paper out of my hand, slow, like I might break if he moved too fast. Then he read it. His face didn't change. "This isn't mine."

"That's your signature."

"It's a copy of my signature." He turned the page toward the light. "See the ink bleed at the bottom loop? That's a stamp. Someone forged this."

I laughed. It came out ugly. "Of course you'd say that."

"Evie." He stepped closer. I stepped back. My spine hit the vault door. "I didn't sell your brother."

"Then why is your name on the order?"

"Because someone wants you to think I did." His voice dropped, rough and tight. "Someone who knows you'd run the second you saw it."
