Chapter 13 · He Really Sold Eli
"Explain the signature."
I shoved the transfer order against Kane's chest. The paper crumpled between his ribs and my knuckles. He didn't step back.
"Evie."
"Your signature. Your company stamp. Eli's cage number right there in the routing code." My voice cracked. I hated that it cracked. "You signed him over to EmberSaint three months before you ever walked into that bar and offered me this deal."
Kane's jaw tightened. The scar that ran down his throat looked darker in the low light of the vault. Around us, the walls hummed with the building's backup power. The main grid was still down. The emergency LEDs painted everything the color of old blood.
"I can explain," he said.
"Then do it."
He reached for my wrist. I jerked back.
"Don't touch me."
His hand hung in the air between us for a second. Then he let it drop. His eyes were too calm. That scared me more than anything.
"I signed that transfer," Kane said. "I'm not going to lie to you."
The floor tilted under me. I'd known it. I'd seen the proof.
