Chapter 18 · Route Under the Ring

"You want me to walk into his tunnels?" I shoved the tablet back across the table. "Are you insane?"

Kane didn't blink. "I want you alive when you find your brother. Vale's got three ways into that gala. Street level's crawling with his security. Roof's got snipers. Underground's the only door he thinks he owns."

"He doesn't own it?"

"No." Kane's voice dropped. "I do."

We were back in the glass room at the top of his compound, the city spread out below us like a circuit board. Nora stood by the door, arms crossed, watching Kane like she was deciding whether to let him finish talking or throw him through the window. Lark was gone. She'd handed me that burned list an hour ago and disappeared back into the sublevels without a word.

The list had Eli's name on it. And tonight's date.

I pressed my palms flat on the table. "You're telling me there's a tunnel that runs under the entire financial district, and you just happen to have the keys."

"Not keys." Kane slid a thin steel card across to me. "Bloodprint. Mine opens the inner ring. Yours will open the donor hall.
