Chapter 8 · The Door Her Mom Left Behind
"Your brother's awake," Kane said from the doorway. "He's asking for you."
I turned so fast my ribs screamed. "Where?"
"Medical wing. Two levels down." He stepped in, and the light caught the edge of his jaw—still human, still sharp. "But there's something you need to see first."
"No." I pushed past him. "I'm not playing your games. You said he's awake, so I'm going—"
His hand closed around my wrist. Not hard. Just enough to stop me cold.
"Let go."
"Listen to me." His voice dropped, and I hated how steady it was. "Your brother woke up screaming. He said a name."
My stomach flipped. "What name?"
"Yours." Kane's grip loosened, but he didn't let go. "And your mother's."
The air went thin.
"He said Kane Voss smelled the same the night she died."
I yanked my arm free. "You're lying."
"I'm not." He pulled something from his coat—a keycard, matte black, no logo. "Your mom left a file in my vault. It's been locked since the night she died. The access code is your birthdate."
I stared at the card.
