Chapter 10 · Put Her on Trial

The lights go out and I'm already moving.

I grab Silas by the arm. He's barely standing but he doesn't pull away. The bond flares hot in my chest and for once I don't fight it. I let it guide me through the dark.

"Ivy." His voice is rough. "You came back."

"Shut up and move."

Behind us I hear Grayson's guy swearing. Footsteps scraping tile. Then a voice cuts through the blackout and it's not his.

"Everyone remain where you are." Magistrate Thorne. Amplified. "This facility is now under lockdown."

I don't stop. I pull Silas toward what I hope is a side exit but we only make it three steps before the emergency lights kick in. Red glow everywhere. And standing in the hallway between us and the door is Lady Casta with six Court guards.

She's smiling.

"Miss Moore." She says it like she's greeting me at a garden party. "How fortunate. We were just coming to collect you."

I step in front of Silas. "He needs medical attention."

"He'll receive it. After the trial."

"What trial?"

Casta's smile doesn't move. "Yours."

The bond twists in my chest.
