Chapter 18 · Silver Through the Moonlight
"Down!"
I yank Cain sideways as the window explodes. Glass everywhere. The bullet buries itself in the wall where his head was half a second ago.
Silver. I can smell it—sharp, burnt metal that makes my teeth ache.
"They're early." Blood's running down Cain's shoulder where I grabbed him. My nails are half-shifted and I didn't even notice. His eyes are full wolf now, gold bleeding through the brown. "Marcus doesn't wait."
"How many?"
"Enough." He's at the other window, looking at the tree line. Boots on gravel. Safeties clicking off. "He brought the whole regional unit."
The bond's still burning under my skin. Settling in. Locking down. My vision's sharper. The alarm's too loud. And there's this pull toward Cain that makes my chest hurt, like a fishhook buried somewhere vital.
I hate it.
I need it.
I don't know which one's winning.
"So we run," I say.
"Can't." He points through the broken window. Lights in the trees—flashlights, rifle scopes, the cold gleam of silver rounds. They're surrounding the whole camp. "Pups are in the main lodge. Ella's moving them to the root cellar, but if Marcus decides to burn us out—"
Another window shatters.
