Chapter 21 · Don't Trust Your Husband

I woke up on Ethan's couch with blood in my mouth.

Not mine. The taste was wrong. Metallic and cold, like I'd licked a frozen rail. My head was splitting and someone had wrapped a blanket around me that smelled like wet dog and antiseptic.

"You're awake." Ethan's voice came from somewhere behind me.

I sat up too fast and the room tilted. "What the hell happened."

"You passed out. The revenant got close enough to—" He stopped. Walked around the couch so I could see him. He'd changed into clean clothes but there was still blood under his nails. "How much do you remember."

Everything. Mara's yellow eyes. The thing wearing her skin. The words that came out of her mouth before Ethan ripped her head off.

He killed her. He's one of them.

I shoved the blanket off and stood. My legs were shaking but I wasn't going to do this sitting down. "Where is she."

"The morgue's been cleaned. Viktor's people handled it."

"That's not what I asked."

Ethan didn't move. He was standing between me and the door like he knew exactly what I was thinking. "Charlotte. Sit down."

"Don't tell me what to do.
