Chapter 21 · Neon Blood Escape
"Down!" Jaxon slammed me into the concrete as the warehouse wall blew inward.
Heat punched across my back. Metal screamed. A body flew through the smoke and hit the far support column hard enough to bend it.
I shoved Jaxon off me. "You used me as a shield."
"You’re welcome."
A red targeting beam slid across his chest.
I grabbed his coat and yanked him sideways. The shot cracked through the air where his ribs had been. It punched a hole in the cargo crate behind him.
Jaxon stared at the smoking crate. Then he looked at me.
"That was almost touching," he said.
"Try touching me again and I’ll break your hand."
"Save it for the people trying to kill us."
Three corporate hunters stepped through the blown wall. Black armor. White face plates. Rifles locked against their shoulders. Behind them came a fourth figure, taller than the rest, moving through the dust without even raising a weapon.
My vision caught on her face.
My face.
Not exactly. Her jaw was sharper. Her hair was cut close to the skull. A silver line ran from her temple to her throat, glowing under the skin.
