“I saw it when you touched me.”
“That wasn’t your memory.”
“Then whose was it?”
He raised the rifle, but his arm shook too badly to aim.
Sloane looked at the weapon, then at him. “Put it down.”
“Answer me.”
“I can’t.”
“Who put that memory in you?”
“I said I can’t!”
Her voice cracked. The bond sent the crack through him like a blade.
Kael lowered the rifle by an inch. “You knew me before the slums.”
“No.”
“You knew me before the lab.”
“No.”
“Then why do you have my memories?”
Sloane pressed a hand to her temple. “Because they’re inside me.”
His finger tightened near the trigger.
She saw it and stepped closer anyway.
“Kael, listen.”
“Don’t come closer.”
“You don’t want to shoot me.”
“Don’t tell me what I want.”
“You want the truth.”
“I want you out of my head.”
Her expression broke for half a second. “You think I don’t?”
“I think you’re lying.”
“I am.
