Then Kael’s back arched against the chair.
A pulse of blue light flashed from the wound and raced up his neck. His pupils tightened. The gene-suppressor had found the active sequence.
My sequence.
"Damn it." I grabbed the injector. "The code is spreading."
"How long?"
"Less than two minutes."
"Until what?"
"Until your modified cells shut down."
"And yours?"
"Mine are already screaming."
The words came out before I could stop them.
Kael’s eyes cut to mine. "You can feel it?"
"Don’t ask questions."
"You can feel what’s happening to me."
"I said shut up."
The pull hit again.
Not pain. Not exactly. It was a sharp tug behind my sternum, like a wire had hooked into my chest and someone on the other end had yanked. My fingers jerked. The injector slipped and clattered across the tray.
Kael caught it before it fell.
"You’re not steady enough," he said.
"Give it back."
"You’re going to inject the wrong sequence."
"Give it back."
He held the injector between two fingers. "Ask properly."
I grabbed his collar and leaned into him. "Give me the damn injector, or I’ll break your hand."
His gaze flicked over my face.
