We ran.

The drone fired behind us. The blast ripped through a vending stall, sending metal panels across the alley. I shoved Jax through a low doorway and followed as another burst shredded the wall where my head had been.

We fell into a cramped maintenance room.

Jax hit the floor first. I landed over him again.

He groaned. "You really like this position."

"Keep talking."

"I didn't say stop."

I pressed my knee beside his hip and held the knife to his throat.

He went quiet.

The room was barely wide enough for both of us. His leg was trapped under mine. My palm rested against his chest. His heartbeat kicked hard under my hand.

"You knew I'd kill them," I said.

"I knew you could."

"No. You knew I would enjoy it."

Jax's expression changed.

"I knew you wouldn't enjoy it."

"I wanted another target."

"That's the lock talking."

"Stop blaming the machine."

"Then blame Olympus."

"Maybe I should blame you."

"For what?"

"For knowing me and keeping your mouth shut."

His eyes hardened. "You told me not to tell you.
