Chapter 18 · Neon Zero - Chapter 18: Wrong Memories

"Get your hand off my head." Knox's fingers tightened against my temple. "Mara, don't fight the link. If you break it, the core will cook both of us."

"Then stop digging through my brain."

"I'm not digging. You're bleeding memories into mine."

His voice hit my ear, low and rough, while the room snapped sideways. One second I was on my knees beside the dead transit console. The next, I was standing in a white room with a little boy screaming behind glass.

Not my memory.

I knew that because I had never seen the boy before.

Still, my chest hurt like I had been the one locked behind the glass.

Knox swore and pulled me against him. His arm locked around my ribs before my legs gave out. Heat pressed through his jacket. His heartbeat punched against my back, too fast to be calm and too steady to be panic.

"What did you see?" he demanded.

"A kid. In a lab."

His grip went hard.

"What kid?"

"You tell me. You were the one inside my head."

The white room flickered again.
