Chapter 25 · The One Who Didn't Reset

"Drop the gun, Mark."

Emma's voice cut through the static hum filling the warehouse. Her hand was steady. The Glock aimed square at his chest.

Mark didn't move. Kyle stood three feet to his left, blood still dripping from his nose, that unhinged grin plastered across his face like he'd just won something.

"Emma," Mark said. Kept his own gun trained on Kyle. "Don't."

"I said drop it."

Kyle laughed. Low and wet. "Oh, this is new."

Mark's finger twitched on the trigger. "He's the one killing people. He's the one who murdered your husband."

"I know," Emma said.

That stopped him cold.

"You know?"

"I know what he is. I know what he did." Emma took a step closer. Her eyes didn't leave Mark's. "But you were going to let me die."

Kyle's grin widened. He tilted his head like a kid watching ants burn under a magnifying glass. "Oh man. She figured it out."

Mark's jaw clenched. "That's not—"

"You set the trap," Emma said. Her voice was ice. "You baited him with me. You knew he'd come after me once he realized I had the anchor. You were counting on it."

"To catch him," Mark said.
