Chapter 8 · Railrun Overdrive

"Get off the train!" Kane shouted.

A drone punched through the roof above me.

Steel screamed. Sparks sprayed across my face. I ducked behind a torn seat as the carriage lurched hard enough to throw three armed men into the opposite wall.

"You first," I yelled.

Kane grabbed the back of my jacket and yanked me down before a second burst of machine fire chewed through the seats. His chest hit my shoulder. Heat pressed through his tactical vest. His breath brushed my ear, sharp and controlled, like he had not just watched half the roof come apart.

"Move when I move."

"That's not a plan."

"It's the only one keeping you alive."

"You always this romantic under pressure?"

His hand tightened on my jacket. "Keep talking and I let the train throw you out."

The floor jumped again.

I slammed into him, palm catching against the hard plate over his ribs. For one stupid second, our faces were inches apart. His eyes stayed on mine, cold and bright under the red emergency lights.

Then a bullet snapped between us.

Kane shoved me behind the seat and fired over my head.
