Chapter 9 · Bait in Blood
"Kane, get off me!" I drove my elbow backward and hit something solid.
His arm locked around my waist before I could swing again. He hauled me behind a broken cargo hauler as rifle fire chewed through the railcar above us.
"You want to die that badly?" he snapped.
"I want my brother!"
"Then stop running into bullets."
Another burst cracked across the yard. Sparks jumped from the steel beside my face. Kane shoved me lower, his chest pressed against my back, one hand braced over my shoulder while the other held his pistol toward the tracks.
His body was hot against mine. Too hot. The neural link between us carried every spike of panic, every hard breath, every violent twitch in his muscles.
I hated that I could feel him.
I hated that he could feel me too.
"Let go," I hissed.
"No."
"That wasn't a request."
"Good. I don't take orders from people trying to sprint into crossfire."
I shoved at his wrist. His grip tightened just enough to stop me, not enough to hurt. That made it worse. Kane never needed much force.
