Chapter 16 · Pureblood

The second claw pushed free.

The scent trap reacted.

The green mist turned white and rushed toward me. It wrapped around my legs, climbed my body, and sank into every cut the smoke could find.

My wolf snarled.

The sound ripped out of my throat before I could stop it.

Someone whispered, "Pureblood."

Another soldier said, "She's pureblooded."

Rayne's voice cracked over them. "Eyes forward! Nobody points a weapon at her!"

A hunter fired anyway.

The bolt flew at my chest.

I caught it.

My claws closed around the shaft an inch from my heart. The impact drove me backward, but the wood splintered in my hand instead of entering my body.

The soldiers went silent.

The hunter on the ridge swore.

I threw the broken bolt back.

It struck him under the jaw.

Rayne stepped in front of me, blade raised. "What the hell are you?"

"The woman keeping your men alive."

"That wasn't an answer."

"You don't deserve one.
