Chapter 33 · I roared

I turned and threw my head back.

My howl slammed through the nursery.

The wolves halted mid-charge. Their eyes turned toward me.

"Hold!" I roared. "No one touches that chamber!"

The hunters fired.

The pack dropped low. Bullets tore through the stone above us. I ran straight at the gunfire, shifted fully, and hit the first hunter hard enough to crush him into the wall.

He tried to stab me.

I caught his wrist in my jaws and flung him into the second man.

The third raised his rifle toward Rayne.

I sprang.

A shot cracked past my ear.

Rayne's blade cut across the hunter's rifle, splitting the barrel. He seized the man's collar and threw him into the wreckage.

"You all right?" he demanded.

I shifted back on shaking legs. "Ask me after you get the other one."

"You're bleeding."

"So are you. Stop staring at me and open the tank."

He looked down at the pup in his arms.

The baby had stopped crying. One tiny hand clutched Rayne's shirt.

Rayne stared at those fingers like they had tied him to the floor.

"What?" I snapped.

"He stopped when I held him."

"Don't get sentimental."

"I wasn't.
