Chapter 45 · The Pup Under Silver Eyes

"Get down!"

Rayne shoved me flat against the cave wall as the helicopter's searchlight swept across the entrance.

His chest hit mine. Blood soaked through his shirt and smeared across my hands, warm and sticky from the wound I'd carved open to pull the silver shard out of his heart.

The mark on his shoulder burned against my mouth.

I hadn't finished it. I hadn't claimed him. I hadn't forgiven him.

And he still stood between me and Cole's hunters with a knife in one hand and silver burning through both eyes.

"Move," I whispered.

"No."

"Rayne, you're bleeding."

"I said no."

The searchlight slipped away from the cave mouth. For half a second, the darkness gave us back our hiding place.

Then a rifle cracked outside.

Stone burst beside my cheek.

Rayne twisted, taking the flying grit across his back. His arm came around my waist so fast my boots left the ground.

"What the hell are you doing?" I hissed.

"Keeping you behind me.
