Cole surged against the guards. "You stupid little bitch."

"Answer him," Rayne said.

Cole spat blood onto the dirt. "The boy is mine by law."

"I didn't ask about law."

The Alpha edge in Rayne's voice cut through the yard.

Cole stopped smiling.

I stepped between them.

"He's yours," I said.

Rayne stared at me.

The camp seemed to pull tight around us.

"Say that again," he said.

"Don't make me."

"You just told me the child is mine."

"I told you his blood is yours. I never said you were his father."

His eyes narrowed.

"Sera."

"We don't have time for your pride."

"This isn't pride. This is my life being ripped open in front of my soldiers."

"Good. Now you know how it feels."

His hand closed around the hilt of the blade.

I expected rage.

Instead, he pushed the weapon closer to me.

"Take it."

I looked down.

"What?"

"Take my blade."

"I have a knife."

"Not one that can cut this oath.
