Chapter 9 · Into the Forbidden Snow

"You don't get to chain me and call it a rescue." Rayne's fist closed around the silver cuff at my wrist, dragging me back before I could reach the tree line.

The metal bit through my glove. My wolf slammed against it, furious and trapped.

Behind us, Ironfang soldiers crowded the yard with rifles raised. Above them, Cole's red signal flares burned through the dark one after another. Three. Then five. Then a whole line of them, marking our camp for every gunman in the valley.

Rayne did not look at the sky. He looked at me.

"Your pup is out there," he said.

My throat closed.

He saw it. Of course he saw it. The moment my face changed, his grip tightened.

"Where?"

"Go to hell."

"Sera."

"You heard me."

He stepped in until my back hit the iron post beside the gate. His body blocked the soldiers' view, but not their attention. Every rifle stayed pointed in our direction. Every man in that yard knew Rayne had found something worth hiding.

His breath touched my cheek.
