Chapter 14 · Don't Look Back. Run Down.
The chain between them rattled like a death sentence.
Rin didn't look back. She'd learned that lesson three resets ago. Looking back got you killed. Looking back meant you saw the blade before it opened your throat, and somehow that made it worse.
Kael's hand locked around her wrist—not the one bound by the stone's glowing verdict, the other one—and yanked her left when she would've gone right. The corridor split. She didn't argue. He'd kept her alive this long. Also, the chain connecting their marked wrists meant she didn't have a choice.
"Down," he said. Not a suggestion.
She went down.
The stairs were narrow, cut into stone that looked older than the sect itself. No torches. No lanterns. Just the faint greenish glow coming off the chain between them, courtesy of whatever the trial stone had branded them with an hour ago. LIFELINE ANCHOR. She still didn't know what that meant. She knew it itched.
