Reset at the Execution Platform

Chapter 33 · The Executioner Remembers

The chains were already on when Rin opened her eyes.

Not the cold shock of waking. Not the gasping confusion of another reset. Just the weight of iron at her wrists and the crowd noise building like a wave about to break. She was on the platform. The sun was too bright. And Kael stood three feet away, holding the executioner's blade.

His face was wrong. Not blank. Not cold. He looked at her the way someone looks at a puzzle they've seen before but can't quite solve. His jaw was tight. The blade in his hand wasn't steady.

"You remember," Rin said. Her voice came out flat. No question mark. She didn't have the energy for hope.

Kael's knuckles went white around the hilt. "Pieces. Not—not all of it. You drove something into your chest. I tried to stop you. Then I was here." His eyes flicked down. "And that thing is still in you."

Rin felt it before she looked. The core sat under her ribs like a second heart, pulsing wrong. Too hot. Too loud. Every beat sent a thread of red light through her veins, visible under her skin.

The crowd was chanting.
