Reset Protocol: Death Loop Evolution

Chapter 18 · Reset Protocol - Chapter 18: The Observation Layer Has No Door Out

"She's bleeding through her sleeves."

Lucas pointed at Vera's arms. Dark red seeped through the fabric, spreading in thin lines like roots.

Vera didn't look down. "I know."

"You know?" Mark stepped closer. "What do you mean you know?"

"It started an hour ago." Vera pulled up her left sleeve. The skin underneath was splitting along the forearm, not bleeding out but opening into narrow slits. Something dark and ridged pushed through. "The mutation's accelerating. Protocol's forcing the next phase."

Erin, the Observer—the woman who wore Erin's face but spoke like she'd never met them before—stood three feet away, hands still inside her coat pockets. "Subject 862 is entering aggressive adaptation mode. She has approximately four hours before cognitive override."

"Four hours until what?" Mark's hand went to the knife Vera had given him. Still in his jacket pocket. Still cold.

"Until she stops being Vera Zhao," Erin said. "The protocol doesn't archive people. It archives viable mutations. Her consciousness is irrelevant data."

Vera laughed, short and sharp. "So I'm a specimen."

"You were always a specimen. The moment you entered the zone." Erin tilted her head, and for half a second her expression flickered—something almost human, almost guilty.
