Reset Protocol: Death Loop Evolution

Chapter 24 · Reset Protocol - Chapter 24: The Observer Has a Name

"Input the timestamp." The Observer's voice came through the vents, flat and mechanical. "Your first death. Down to the second."

Mark stared at the console. The countdown had stopped at 00:04:17, frozen mid-tick. The screen showed two empty fields, cursor blinking in the first one.

"What happens if I do?" he said.

"The system registers you as the primary sample. It locks your evolution chain and releases everyone else."

Vera stepped closer to the console, her changed eyes catching the screen light. "And if he doesn't?"

"Then I pick for him." The Observer's silhouette shifted behind the observation glass. "The protocol needs one anchor specimen. It will take the most evolved subject in the zone. Right now, that's her."

Mark's claws scraped against his palm. "You're saying I trade myself or I trade Vera."

"That's the design."

"Bullshit," Lucas said from the doorway. His voice was rough, like he'd been shouting. "There's always a third option. You just don't want to tell us what it costs."

The Observer went quiet for three seconds. Then: "The third option crashes the entire protocol. No selective extraction. No controlled shutdown. Everything in the zone gets archived at once, including the core.
