Reset Protocol: Death Loop Evolution

Chapter 34 · Reset Protocol - Chapter 34: The Last Reset

"You don't get to use his face."

Vera's voice came out flat, dead. She yanked the key card out of the core and the corpse inside stumbled forward, Mark's face slack and wrong.

"I am Subject 447." The thing wearing Mark's body straightened. Its voice had Mark's cadence but none of the heat. "Loop 23. Spinal termination. You were crying when I died."

"Shut up." Vera's hand went to the gun at her hip. "Mark's right here."

"That Mark is loop 91." The corpse tilted its head. "I'm the archive. The protocol keeps one backup per subject. You knew that."

I shoved past Vera and grabbed the thing by the collar. Up close it smelled like formaldehyde and old blood. "What happens if I destroy you?"

"The protocol loses its anchor." It didn't blink. "But you lose your reset counter. You'll have one body. One life. Human rules."

"Good." I slammed it back into the core. The metal shell screamed. "I'm done being a specimen."

Vera caught my wrist. Her fingers were cold. "Wait. If you destroy the archive, we can't prove the loops happened. The Observer said we need evidence. Timestamp divergence. Evolutionary records.
