Chapter 10 · A Tag With Her Name

Mira Voss stared at the prison tag.

Her name. Her registry code. The ink still smelled fresh.

She turned it over in her hand, the metal cold against her palm. Someone had left it inside the fake door Kade found, tucked into a slot meant for confiscated evidence. The kind of slot tower guards used when they wanted something filed without questions.

Someone wanted her tagged. Someone inside.

She heard boots in the hall outside. Two sets. Moving fast.

"Voss is compromised," a voice said through the door. "Drake's orders. Bring her in quiet."

Mira's pulse kicked up. She looked at Kade, who was crouched by the door with his knife out and that black rune still flickering under his shirt. His eyes met hers.

"You hearing this?" he whispered.

"Yeah."

"What's the play?"

She didn't answer right away. The tag sat heavy in her hand. Her old partner was out there. Rhen. She'd worked three years with him, saved his ass twice, and he'd bought her drinks after every bust that went sideways.

Now he was coming to drag her in.

She slipped the tag into her pocket and pulled her sidearm. "We go through them."

Kade blinked.
