Chapter 3: Boss Wants More Blood

Long-press a paragraph to send danmaku

The warehouse smelled like rust and piss. Chen stood in a ring made of rope and wooden pallets. His opponent was already there, rolling his shoulders. The guy had a flat nose and scar tissue around both eyes. Someone who'd done this a lot.

Boss Zhao leaned against a stack of crates, arms crossed. He wasn't watching Chen. He was watching the crowd. Counting heads. Counting money.

Chen's hands wouldn't stop shaking. Not from fear. From that thing inside him, awake and hungry.

The flat-nose guy spat on the concrete. "You're the kid?"

Chen didn't answer.

"Zhao's running out of bodies, huh?" Flat-nose grinned. Half his teeth were gone. "I'll try not to break you too bad."

Someone rang a bell. Flat-nose came in fast.

Chen took the first hit on purpose. A straight right to the ribs. He needed to know if it still worked. If the metal had really done something or if he'd imagined the whole thing back at the gym.

The punch landed clean. Chen felt the impact but not the pain. Just pressure. Just information. His body logged it and said *more*.

He slipped the next punch and drove his fist into flat-nose's gut. Not hard. Just enough to test.

Flat-nose folded. Dropped to one knee. Puked.

The crowd went quiet. Then someone laughed. Then everyone was yelling.

Chen looked at his hand. No blood. No bruising. The knuckles didn't even ache.

Boss Zhao was staring now. Not at the crowd. At Chen.

Flat-nose tried to get up. Chen kicked him in the chest and he went down again. The bell rang. Fight over. Thirty seconds, maybe less.

Zhao pushed through the crowd and grabbed Chen's wrist. He turned Chen's hand over, checking the knuckles, the fingers. "You're not even breathing hard."

"I'm fine."

"Better than fine." Zhao's eyes were bright. Hungry. "How do you feel? Tired? Sore?"

Chen shook his head. The truth was he felt good. Better than good. That fire in his gut had cooled a little but it wasn't gone. It wanted more.

"Can you go again?"

Chen looked at him. "Tonight?"

"Right now." Zhao was already scanning the crowd. "I got two more fights lined up. You win those, we split three grand."

"Three grand?"

"They'll pay to see you break people, kid. Trust me."

Chen thought about the rust he'd swallowed. The way his ribs had stopped hurting. The way the sandbag had exploded under his fist. Whatever was inside him wasn't done. It needed to eat and the only way to feed it was this.

"Okay."

Zhao grinned. "That's my boy."

The second fight lasted longer. The guy was bigger, heavier, and he knew how to move. He didn't come in wild like flat-nose. He circled. Tested Chen with jabs. Watched for openings.

Chen let him land a few. A hook to the jaw. An uppercut to the ribs. Each hit fed the thing inside him. Each one made his body hum.

Then the big guy got confident. He stepped in close and threw a combination. Left, right, left. Chen blocked the first two and ate the third. His head snapped back. The crowd roared.

Chen tasted blood. His lip had split. He ran his tongue over it and smiled.

The big guy hesitated. Just for a second. That was enough.

Chen surged forward. He didn't think. Didn't plan. His body knew what to do. He ducked under a wild hook and drove his fist into the guy's ribs. Once. Twice. The third punch landed and something cracked. Loud enough to hear over the crowd.

The big guy screamed. Went down clutching his side. Chen stood over him, fists still up, waiting. But the guy didn't get up. He just curled on the concrete, gasping.

Boss Zhao was already pulling Chen back toward the edge of the ring. "Save it. You got one more."

Chen's hands were still clean. No cuts. No swelling. But under the skin something moved. Shifted. He flexed his fingers and felt it. Metal. Not solid yet but close. Like his bones were changing. Hardening.

"Zhao." Chen grabbed the boss's arm. "Something's wrong."

"Nothing's wrong. You're a goddamn gold mine." Zhao shoved a water bottle at him. "Drink. Five minutes, then you're up again."

Chen drank but he didn't taste it. The fire in his stomach was spreading. Up his chest. Down his arms. It felt good and wrong at the same time. Like his body was becoming something else. Something that didn't need water or rest. Just impact. Just violence.

The third opponent stepped into the ring and Chen's gut went cold. The guy was lean, scarred, and older. Forty, maybe. He moved like someone who'd been fighting his whole life. No wasted motion. No showboating.

Boss Zhao whistled. "That's Chen Wu. Used to fight in the pros till he put a guy in a coma. Careful with this one."

"You said three grand."

"You win, yeah. You lose, we still walk with fifteen hundred. But you gotta stay on your feet."

Chen Wu didn't wait for the bell. He came in the second Chen turned around. A straight kick to the ribs. Chen tried to block but the guy was too fast. The kick landed and Chen heard something crack inside him. His ribs. Two of them, maybe three.

The pain hit a second later. White-hot. Blinding. Chen staggered back and Chen Wu followed. A knee to the gut. An elbow to the jaw. Chen's vision went dark at the edges.

He dropped to one knee. Blood filled his mouth. The crowd was screaming but it sounded far away. Underwater.

Then the fire kicked in. The thing inside him woke up all the way. The pain in his ribs vanished. Not dulled. Gone. He felt his bones shift. Realign. Fuse back together. Stronger than before.

Chen stood up. Chen Wu's next punch was already coming. Chen caught it. Bare-handed. Closed his fist around Chen Wu's knuckles and *squeezed*.

Chen Wu's eyes went wide. He tried to pull back. Chen didn't let go. He yanked Chen Wu forward and drove his other fist into the guy's throat. Not a jab. Not a hook. A straight piston punch aimed at the soft spot above the collarbone.

Chen Wu's hands came up to block but Chen's fist went through them. Bones cracked. Fingers bent the wrong way. The punch stopped an inch from Chen Wu's windpipe. Chen could feel the guy's pulse against his knuckles. Fast and terrified.

Someone grabbed Chen from behind. Boss Zhao. "Stop. Stop! You'll kill him!"

Chen didn't move. Couldn't move. The thing inside him wanted to finish it. Wanted to feel the throat collapse. Wanted to see what happened when he let go completely.

"Chen!" A different voice. Higher. Familiar.

Su Mian pushed through the crowd and ducked under the rope. She grabbed Chen's wrist. The one still cocked back, ready to punch through Chen Wu's neck.

"Let him go."

Chen blinked. The warehouse came back into focus. Chen Wu was on his knees, gasping, holding his broken hand. The crowd had gone quiet. Everyone was staring at Chen.

He opened his fist. Chen Wu collapsed forward. Someone dragged him out of the ring.

Su Mian didn't let go of Chen's wrist. She turned his hand over. Her eyes narrowed. "What is that?"

Chen looked down. Black dust was leaking from his knuckles. Not blood. Not rust. Something else. It sifted through Su Mian's fingers and hit the concrete like ash. Where it landed, the floor hissed. Tiny pockmarks appeared in the stone.

Boss Zhao leaned in close. "What the hell did you eat, kid?"

Chen didn't answer. He couldn't. Because the dust was still coming. Pouring out of him in thin streams. And under his skin, something was laughing.
