Sent to Break Him

Chapter 36 · Not Cargo

"Six trucks," the radio said again, static chewing the edges. "No plates. Coming off the Hollow Creek turn."

Levi's hand was still fisted in my collar. Neither of us had moved. His mouth was an inch from mine, his breath hot and wrong-sweet, that scent still rolling off him in waves that made my teeth ache.

The stairs groaned. Boots. More than one set.

"Let go," I said.

"Make me."

The door slammed open before I could. Priya, gun already up, eyes flicking from the radio to us to the two inches of nothing between our faces. She didn't blink. She'd seen worse from him. Probably not this.

"Boss. Trucks." She said it like she hadn't seen anything at all, which told me she'd decided fast that she hadn't.

Levi's hand opened. He stepped back so clean it was like the last ninety seconds had never happened, like his pupils weren't still blown, like his shirt collar wasn't damp from where I'd had him pinned.

"How far," he said.

"Eight minutes if they don't slow down at the checkpoint." Priya's jaw worked. "They're not slowing down."

"Whose trucks?" I asked.

"Nobody's claiming them." She looked at Levi.
