Chapter 11 · The Hold Doesn't Open
"Say that again." Torin's hand froze on the wrench, knuckles white around the handle. "Say it slow."
The handheld on the pipe rack hissed, then Voss's man came through clean. "It's not in the internal file anymore, Mr. Black. It's on the trustee's public docket. Exhibit forty-one. Anybody with a browser can pull it up right now."
June's stomach dropped through the concrete floor. "Public," she said. "As in the whole world gets to see the two of us six inches apart in a tunnel."
"That's the one." The voice didn't sound sorry about it. "Board's calling an emergency session. Ninety minutes."
Torin threw the wrench. It hit the pipe rack and rang like a bell in the cold air. "Get Voss on this radio. Now."
"He's already gone, sir. Left it with me."
June grabbed the wrench off the floor, hands shaking, and jammed it back into the valve slot herself. It didn't move. It never moved.
