Chapter 9 · Sparkbound - Chapter 9: Blackout
"Move, Wren!" Draven slammed his shoulder into the elevator doors as another blast punched through the shaft behind them.
The metal buckled. Bolts screamed loose.
Wren stumbled across the service platform, one hand clamped around her tethered wrist. The black band between them burned hot enough to bite through her sleeve.
"I'm moving! You keep throwing me into walls!"
"Then stop standing where I throw you."
"That doesn't even make sense!"
"It will when we're alive."
A second blast tore through the corridor. The platform jumped under Wren's boots. She grabbed the railing, but the railing snapped clean off and dropped into the elevator shaft.
Draven caught the back of her coat.
For half a second, his grip held.
Then the fabric ripped.
Wren fell.
"Draven!"
Her boots kicked over open air. The elevator shaft dropped beneath her, black and deep, with broken cables whipping through the dark. Her fingers caught the edge of the platform, but the metal cut through her gloves.
Draven hit the floor on his stomach and caught her wrist.
The tether between them flashed blue-white.
Pain shot up Wren's arm. It wasn't just the bond reacting.
