Steal the Starlight Contract

Chapter 27 · Steal the Starlight - Chapter 27: Mind Minefield

"Get out of my head." Wren's voice hit me so hard my knees buckled.

I caught the kitchen counter before my face met the floor. The black shard in my palm flared hot, and somewhere behind my eyes, Wren gasped.

"You first," I snapped.

"I am not in your head on purpose."

"Then stop thinking so loudly."

"That doesn't even make sense."

"Neither does hearing you complain about my coffee while you're standing three feet away."

Wren froze beside the sink. Her fingers tightened around the chipped mug she'd been holding. Coffee sloshed over her knuckles. She didn't notice.

I did.

"You think my coffee tastes like battery acid," she said.

"It does."

"You think I should burn the mug."

"Also true."

Her eyes narrowed. "You think I look good when I'm annoyed."

The heat in my hand jumped to my wrist.

"I think you talk too much when you're scared," I said.

Her mouth parted.

There it was. The part neither of us wanted to say out loud.

The safe house had been locked down since we crawled through the service entrance last night. One door. No windows we could open.
