Steal the Starlight Contract

Chapter 37 · Steal the Starlight - Chapter 37: No More Starlight, Just Us

"Don't open that door." Cade's hand clamped around my wrist before my fingers touched the emergency bar.

I jerked hard. "Let go."

"Not until you stop trying to walk into a firing squad."

The broken studio groaned around us. Half the ceiling had dropped during the blast, leaving cables, metal braces, and chunks of glowing set glass scattered across the floor. Wren stood three steps away, one hand pressed to her ribs and the other wrapped around the black shard in my palm.

The shard burned through my glove.

Not hot enough to hurt. Not yet.

Outside the sealed doors, thousands of voices crashed together. The crowd had heard the explosion. They had seen the white flash swallow the broadcast tower. Now they wanted someone to blame, and our faces were already plastered across every emergency screen in the city.

Ours.

The perfect hero and the villain who had supposedly destroyed her.

"You're bleeding," Wren said.

"So are you."

"I asked first."

"And I ignored you first. We're both doing great."

Cade's grip tightened. His thumb pressed against the inside of my wrist, right over the thin blue line where the power link ran beneath my skin.
