Chapter 9 · Steal the Starlight - Chapter 9: Cut the Wire

"Stay in character or we both hit concrete!" Wren's hand locks around my wrist and yanks me hard against the edge.

The wire above us just snapped. Like, actually snapped. One second we're posed for the drones, the next the main line whips past my face and I'm staring at a forty-story drop.

"Ellis! Hold!" she hisses, breath hot on my cheek. "Cameras are live!"

"Live? We're about to die live!" I choke out. My boots slip on the ledge. Gravel sprays off into nothing. "The wire's cut! Wren, the wire's cut!"

"I know it's cut!" Her light flares, gold and blinding, trying to catch us. Her other arm wraps around my waist. Too tight. Too close. "So you better act like the villain who cut it!"

What?

Cade's voice explodes in my earpiece. "Stay in script! Both of you! You fall out of character and I can't cover the feed!"

"Are you insane?" I scream at him, at her, at anyone. "We are falling!"

We're not falling yet. We're dangling. Wren's got one hand on a busted rigging bar and the other crushing my ribs, holding me to her chest. My feet kick empty air.
