The iron door opened without a hinge.
It unfolded.
Letters peeled away from the frame in thin black strips, each one curling like ash in a wind that did not touch Noa’s hair. Beyond it waited a stairwell descending through darkness so complete it seemed solid.
Evelyn kept one hand against Noa’s back. The other held the stolen brass pistol beneath her coat, though the weapon had lost its Council seal and, with it, most of its authority. Her fingers were still shaking.
Noa noticed. She noticed everything now—the tremor in Evelyn’s wrist, the shallow hitch in her breathing, the smell of burned paper clinging to both of them. She noticed the place where Evelyn’s borrowed childhood memory rested inside her mind like a coal that refused to cool.
A floor beneath a child’s knees.
Dust in her throat.
A woman’s hand pressed over a little girl’s mouth while boots passed overhead.
