The City That Buried Her Name

Chapter 12 · Names for the Fire

The dead began to speak.

Not in voices. In ink.

Every name carved into the archive walls shivered at once. Letters crawled out of their grooves like black insects, spilling across stone, copper, and bone-white paper. The sound was soft—scratching, whispering, a thousand quills dragged by invisible hands—but it filled the chamber until Noa could feel it inside her teeth.

Her burned hand tightened around the original record.

The page pulsed beneath her palm.

“Noa.”

The name came from the walls.

“Noa.”

From the floor.

“Noa Vey.”

From the wound beneath her ribs.

She staggered back. The archive tilted around her, its shelves stretching upward into a darkness crowded with suspended files. Each file bore a name. Each name opened like a mouth.

Evelyn caught her before her knees struck the floor.

Noa flinched at the contact, then froze.

Leather. Rainwater. Iron. The faint bitter scent of old coffee. A heartbeat pressed against her shoulder.

The woman’s face was gone. Not blurred. Not unfamiliar. Gone, as if someone had taken a knife to the shape of it and scraped away every feature.

But the voice remained.

“Stay with me,” Evelyn said.

Noa clutched the front of her coat.
