Chapter 19 · The Dead File
The archive door sealed behind them with a sound like a held breath finally released.
Noa kept one hand against the wall until the corridor stopped tilting. Heat crawled beneath the bandages wrapped around her ribs and shoulder. Every movement pulled at the burned skin. The pain was useful. It gave her something solid to hold on to.
Across the narrow chamber, Evelyn stood beneath the borrowed seal of Meret Vale, one gloved hand pressed to the black stone panel where the number 12-04-771 glowed in pale blue light.
The Nameless Child crouched beside her, silent as a discarded shadow. Her dirty fingers hovered a hair’s breadth from the number but never touched it.
“Don’t,” Noa said.
The girl looked at her.
Noa swallowed. “Not yet.”
The child’s gaze flicked toward the ceiling.
Footsteps sounded somewhere above them.
Not one set. Several.
Evelyn heard them too. Her shoulders tightened, and the stolen authority of Meret Vale settled over her face like a mask. “We have minutes.”
“Then we use them.”
Noa turned back to the wall.
The archive chamber had no shelves, no desks, no visible doors except the one behind them.
