Chapter 24 · The One Who Stays
The memory core did not sound like a machine.
It sounded like a city screaming in its sleep.
White light poured through the archive chamber in violent pulses, turning the suspended shelves into ribs around them. Every pulse carried a voice. A mother calling a son's forgotten name. A judge remembering the bribe he had taken. A little girl sobbing because she suddenly knew the dog buried beneath her garden had once been her brother's guardian hound.
The memories struck the walls and came back sharper.
Noa dropped to one knee.
Blood slid beneath the collar of her coat. The wound in her side had reopened when the core tore her original name out of the dark. She pressed one hand against it, but the other hand was shaking harder. Her fingers kept opening and closing as if trying to hold on to something invisible.
“Noa.” Evelyn caught her shoulder before she fell forward. “Look at me.”
Noa did.
For one breath, she was only a woman with gray eyes, blood on her lips, and terror behind her teeth. Then another memory broke over her.
She saw herself twelve years ago, standing barefoot inside the same chamber. Younger. Colder.
