The City That Buried Her Name

Chapter 26 · The First Contract Beneath the City

The city said its name, and every name in it went silent.

Noa felt the silence enter through her teeth.

The silver corridors beneath the Sanctum had always hummed with the pressure of contracts—thousands of legal vows braided together beneath the stone, each one carrying a name, a promise, a destination. Now the hum was gone. In its place came a vast, listening stillness that pressed against her eardrums until she could hear the blood moving in her skull.

Evelyn lay in her arms, limp but breathing.

Noa tightened her hold and staggered away from the ruptured core. The chamber around them shuddered. Cracks crawled over the black pillars, glowing from within with pale threads of memory. Faces flickered across the stone: a mother searching for a child she no longer recognized, a wedding couple staring at rings engraved with blank metal, a boy in an apprentice coat asking a street full of strangers if anyone knew his name.

Then the faces vanished.

The floor buckled.

Noa dropped to one knee, shielding Evelyn with her body as fragments of luminous script rained from the ceiling. They struck the ground without sound and dissolved into mist. One fragment brushed Noa's wrist.
