Chapter 27 · The Memory Backwash
The first thing Noa heard was the city screaming.
Not with one voice. With thousands.
The sound poured through the buried chamber in waves—children calling for mothers whose names had vanished, merchants shouting the passwords to their own shops, lovers repeating half-finished promises before the words dissolved into static. Above them, far beyond the layers of stone and iron, the city was being emptied one memory at a time.
The primal contract pulsed beneath Noa’s palms.
It was no longer stone. It had become something wet and luminous, a translucent heart wrapped in rings of black script. Each beat sent a shock through the floor. Each shock pulled something from her.
A face.
A street.
The taste of winter apples.
Noa jerked her hands away, but the contract held her wrists with threads of light. The symbols crawled beneath her skin, searching for a place to root.
Across the chamber, Evelyn staggered against a broken pillar. Her coat was torn at the shoulder, and blood ran in a narrow line from her temple to her jaw. She wiped it with the back of her hand and looked at Noa.
For one terrible second, Noa could not remember why that mattered.
