The City That Buried Her Name

Chapter 29 · When Destiny Breaks

The sound beneath the city was not an explosion.

It was a lock turning.

Noa felt it in her teeth before she heard it—a deep metallic click traveling through the foundations of the Sanctum, through the bones of the towers above, through every legal name carved into every citizen's soul. The floor shuddered beneath her boots. Dust drifted from the vaulted ceiling in silver curtains.

Then the First Core opened its eye.

A ring of white fire split across the black sphere suspended over the chamber. Light poured through the fracture, bright enough to bleach the blood on Noa's sleeve and turn Evelyn's face into something carved from winter.

All around them, the naming machinery woke.

Hundreds of glass cylinders ignited at once. Contracts uncoiled from their brass housings and whipped through the air like startled snakes. Names flashed across the walls—Mara Ellison, Tomas Vale, Juniper Ash, David Rook—and vanished before the letters could settle.

Silas Morn staggered beneath the broken dais.

The right side of his body had become a lattice of translucent script. Lines of contract-gold crawled from his throat to his fingertips, replacing skin with clauses and veins with glowing punctuation.
